Franz Josef Messner 1896 - 1945 Edit

Born 8.12.1896 in Brixlegg
Died 23.4.1945 in Mauthausen

Biography

Messner became director or the Semperit Works in Vienna in 1937 and after 1938 maintained close links to the resistance group centred around Heinrich Maier and Walter Caldonazzi. From 1942 onwards, during trips abroad, he passed on information about German arms factories to the US intelligence service. On 29 March 1944 Messner was arrested and, on 27/28 October, was sentenced to death for convictions including high treason. His Brazilian citizenship meant the execution was postponed and Messner was transported to Mauthausen concentration camp, where the commandant Franz Ziereis ordered his killing on 23 April 1945.
