Born 10.7.1928 in Haifa
Died 8.5.1945 in Wels
Biography
Daniel was born in Haifa on 10 July 1928. His parents, Resl and Emil, had emigrated to Palestine from Czechoslovakia but returned to Hodonín when Daniel was a year old. The family lived with our grandmother in the house where Jan Masaryk was born.
In 1943 they were all deported to Theresienstadt, where our grandmother died. Daniel and his father were sent to Auschwitz in 1944, followed by his mother who was gassed on arrival.
Daniel was transported to Mauthausen via the Sachsmunden concentration camp in January 1945. He was presumably held in the tent camp until he was forced to walk to Gunskirchen camp on the death march. He died three days after the liberation of the camp in Wels hospital. He was 16 years old.
Daniel was a gentle, thoughtful boy, always cheerful and helpful. We were both only children, he was exactly a year older and took care of me; he was more like a brother than a cousin. I saw him last in July 1939 when he was eleven and I was ten. I was lucky enough to be leaving for England; he was so proud to be attending the grammar school. He had just started to wear glasses and they made him look very serious. He wanted to become an engineer like his father.
