Biography
Piotr Jakub Kucemba was born in Warsaw. He married on Zofia Kucemba (nee Rachaus), with whom he had two children – son Bogdan Kucemba, also concentration camp prisoner (Groß Rosen, Mauthausen, Sachsenhausen), who died in 2015, and a daughter Stefania Marchlewska (nee Kucemba), who died in 2014. His profession was carpenter. He and his family lived in a part of Warsaw called Old Town in Mostowa street 7/9. They lived an ordinary, very modest life. During Warsaw’s uprising the Old Town was an area of heavy fights between Polish insurgents and Germans. On 2 September 1944 German soldiers entered Warsaw’s Old Town. Many civilians and wounded insurgents were shot dead. My grandfather and his family were taken to Pruszkow camp and their house was burned down by German soldiers. My grandmother and my mother spent the rest of World War 2 in a village outside Warsaw. My uncle Bogdan Kucemba managed to survive and return to Warsaw in 1945.
