Biography
Janusz Szaybo came from a technically gifted nobleman's family connected with Starachowice for many years. He was born in 1904. As a sixteen-year-old adolescent he took part in the Polish-Bolshevik War. On the turn of 1926 and 1927 he served his term in the 12th Regiment of Podolian Uhlans and in the District Headquarters of the Second Corps in Lublin.
As a non-commissioned officer of reserve forces he took part in the defense operations of the war of 1939, fighting near Stanisławów, where he was wounded. Still, he managed to avoid being taken prisoner of war. After a period of convalescence, he succeeded in reaching France, where he joined the Polish Army that was being formed there at that time. He completed a school for officer cadets with the rank of candidate. He was commissioned to the First Regiment of Warsaw Grenadiers of the First Division of Grenadiers.
He found himself taken POW in June 1940 and stayed at the following Stalags: XII A Limburg, II D Stargard and II B Hammerstein (in Czarne). In the last of them he took part in the work of the underground military organization 'Odra'. As a result of being uncovered, he was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the concentration camp Mauthausen, where he was shot dead in November 1944.
