Biography
Izaak van Moppis was born in Amsterdam, Holland, on 10 October 1916 and died in Mauthausen on 18 July 1941 at the age of 24. He was the son of Jacob van Moppis and Sara Fuldauer.
Izaak had one brother, Leiser van Moppis, born on 21 May 1919 in Amsterdam and killed in Sobibor on 23 July 1943. His parents, Jacob and Sara, were also killed in Sobibor that same July.
Izaak van Moppis was married on 20 April 1938 to Gerritje Veldkamp and their daughter, Margaretha Suzanna, was born on 8 October 1938. Gerritje and Margaretha survived the war; Margaretha has two children and five grand children.
Margaretha, then a 3-year-old, remembers very little about her father, but recalls the following incident:
‘We lived on the second floor of an Amsterdam tenement building. One day a man in green clothes and holding a long ‘stick’ was going up the stairs in front of Pappa, and another behind Pappa. Pappa turned around to see me and stretched out his arms toward me. He was told to move on.
I cried, my mother told me that he was going to do some grocery shopping. Being not quite 3 years old, I believed that he was coming back. I grew up constantly looking everywhere I went for my father – Holland, USA, Canada. Hoping…..I never gave up.
In 2006 a niece and nephew started looking into what had happened to Pappa. I finally received some closure in that I no longer felt I needed to continue looking. Rest in peace Pappa, you will not be forgotten.’
Izaak worked for a delivery company using a bicycle cart and there are unconfirmed reports that he was involved with the rescue of German Jews.
Margaretha Suzanna de Vries van Moppis is the daughter of Izaak van Moppis
