Biography

David Korper was a butcher and lived in the eastern part of Amsterdam. He was caught during the razzia of February 1941. There exists a photograph of his arrest at the Josef Daniël Meyerplein (Link to the photo: https://www.joodsmonument.nl/nl/page/180695/david-korper). Also a photoportait has been recovered from David Korper when he served in the Dutch army.

David was a small guy with a big nose. His sister survived the war. She was married with a non-Jew (mixed marriage) and hid her davidstar. Her son (my father) has some vague memories of David. My father was around five or six years old. His uncle (David) joked with him and did the trick with his hand and thumb as if he had stolen the nose of my fathers face …

David has served in the Dutch army (October 1935). According to the military record he was a small guy (height 1.61 m, weight 54 kg). When David was 19 years old he married Klara van de Kar (marriage on 30 April 1934). Klara was murdered in Sobibor, together with her children. They had five children: Eva Korper, born on 22 November 1934 and killed on 21 May 1943 (Sobibor); Hendrika Korper born on 8 December 1935, killed on 21 May 1943 (Sobibor); Simon Korper, born on 22 April 1937, killed on 21 May 1943 (Sobibor); Johannes Korper, born on 14 March 1940, died on 14 March 1941 (in Amsterdam?) and Martha (Matje) Korper, born on 24 June 1939, died on 15 January 2009. Martha survived Bergen-Belsen and Theresienstadt but she suffered all her live, mentally and physically (she limped). Martha was unhappy and had to be treated all her live. Her suffering continues in her children. I had contact with the daughter of Martha: Gerda van den Hoek.
