Biography
Alfred Toczek was born on 6 August 1919 in Cologne and died in Mauthausen on 16 September 1941.
Alfred's younger brothers were identical twins Hans and Fritz (later John and Fred) Toczek. They were sent to Bradford, England to escape the Holocaust in 1938. Alfred's parents were Otto and Johanna Toczek (nee Meyer). Otto ran the family rubber manufacturing business with his brother Siegfried. Alfred worked in the business as a clerk. Otto, Johanna, Siegfried and Mehta Toczek (nee Meyer) went with Alfred's cousin Hugo, to Brussels in 1939.
Otto and Siegfried were detained and deported to Rivesaltes transit camp run by the Vichy French on behalf of the Nazis, near Perpignan France. Siegfried was released, while Otto died of typhoid before he could be transported to Drancy.
Johanna survived the war to be reunited with her twin sons in England in 1947. Siegfried, Mehta and their son Hugo escaped to Cuba and then to the USA.
Alfred went to Holland with his fiancée's family. Here he was detained and deported to Mauthausen in 1941, where he died.
My father, Hans Toczek, was haunted by his father Otto and his brother Alfred's deaths and those of other close relatives. Their cousin Egon Troplovitz, a baker, died in Auschwitz, while his parents Siegfried and Rosa Troplovitz (nee Toczek) were transported to Łódź Ghetto, where they both perished.
