Norbert was in the Jewish Labour Village from 30 April 1938 to 20 March 1941.

He was transported to Amsterdam after the 1st closure of the Labour Village.

Norbert was the youngest in a family of three daughters. His father had a large ‘party goods shop’. Norbert went to the Netherlands in 1936. Before the war, Norbert trained as a farmer, including in Zenderen. Members of his family tried in vain to bring Norbert to Australia. Norbert received an emigration permit in 1939. The Jewish Refugee Committee (Mrs Gertrude van Tijn, also a board member of the Jewish Labour Village) in Amsterdam helped him to apply for a visa and a departure form. He was due to depart from Genoa on the Lloyd Tristino Line on 5 September 1939, but missed the ship. On his return, Norbert went to the Werkdorp on the Wieringermeer. Further attempts to emigrate were unsuccessful. He and the June Group ended up in Mauthausen via Camp Schoorl.

His sister Grete and her husband had gone to Australia before the war.
