Stanisław Proczko 1902 - 1941

Born 29.7.1902
Died 10.9.1941 in Gusen

Biography

Stanisław Proczko was born in Lipine on 29 July 1902.

He followed a military training and graduated cum laude (with honors) in 1924 as under-officer. He was married to Leokadie.

After the coup in May 1926, he was moved to eastern Poland. He served in the police force in Sokółka, Grodno (now Belarus). After the outbreak of World War II, he and his family moved to Raczki (near Suwałki), where he was arrested, despite the warnings (surprisingly from Wermacht soldiers who were his neighbours).

Stanisław Proczko, however, believed that as an ordinary policeman and a man who had never done anything wrong to anyone, he would not be considered an enemy. So, he didn't run away.

End of April, beginning of May 1940, he was arrested. He arrived in Sachsenhausen on 4 May 1940. He was transported to Gusen on 27 May 1940. On 5 June 1940 he arrived in Mauthausen.

His family learned about his fate from the first letter sent in June from KL Mauthausen. From there, he sent one letter almost every two months. But as he was worn out with hard work, the letters kept getting shorter and shorter.

On 18 September 1940 he had a surgery. Probably because of phlegmons they did an incision in his left lower leg to drain the pus. On 6 January 1941 he was moved from Mauthausen to Gusen. He died on 10 September 1941 day at 3 PM and was cremated Saturday 13 September 1941 in Gusen.

The picture beneath, showing Stanisław Proczko with his neighbours, was taken few days before he was arrested.
