Biography

Manuel Lucas Martínez was born in Alhama de Almería on 3 December 1919.

At the young age of 17, he was enlisted in the army voluntarily to defend the legitimate government of the Spanish Republic. Without knowing how to read or write, he went to Almería to join the Almería Batallion, specifically, he joined the 24 mixed brigade, the 96th battalion in the 1st company. From there he arrived Bailén, as member of the 5th Regiment of Popular Militias where they stayed two months before they went to Ciudad Real. At the end of 1936 they went to Morata de Tajuña (Madrid) where they remained until April 1937 and later they went through different towns in Madrid such as Chichón, Colmenar de Oreja, Aranjuez, etc. In March of 1938, they passed the front of Catalonia through Castellón, Moredad, etc. until the battle of the Ebro. Finally, they had to cross the border before the advance of the enemy and arrived in France.

In France our uncle was in an internment camp (we still have to determine which one) and after several months he enlisted in a Workers' Company as the only way to get out of that horrible place. While he was in that company he worked as an auxiliary force of the French army. When they were captured by the Germans in France, my uncle went to Frontstalag 122 in Chaumont Haute-Marne with the number of prisoner 1019. From there he was transferred to the prison camps on German territory. First, to Stalag VI / F in Bocholt, then to Stalag VI / C in Bathorn, then to Stalag XII / D in Trier, and on 31 March 1941 he was transferred to Mauthausen concentration camp which he arrived on 3 April 1941 and was assigned prisoner number 4153. On 8 April 1941 he was transferred to the annexed camp of Gusen with prisoner number 11805. He finally died on 26 January 1942.
