Biography

He was born on 27/12/1915 in Espejo (Córdoba, Spain). His parents were Rafael Peña Lucena and Elisa Córdoba García and he had three siblings: Virgilio, who was also deported to Buchenwald, and Elisa and Licinio, who were repressed for being communists. He was a peasant and at a very young age he was already tending goats.

He fought in the Spanish Civil War, reaching the rank of infantry sergeant in the Republican army. He escaped to France, where he enlisted in the 22nd Foreign Volunteer Marching Regiment.

He was captured in Stalag XVII-A, Kaisersteinbruch (Austria), registration number 54686. On 05/04/1941 he was transferred to the Gestapo prison in Vienna, from where he left two days later for Mauthausen. The convoy was carrying 200 Spanish Republicans, 7 of whom were from Cordoba. Of these, 107 did not survive, among them Hirilio and three of his fellow countrymen.

He arrived at Mauthausen on 07/04/1941, where he was assigned the number 4844. He was transferred to Gusen on 20/10/1941, registration number 14417. He died there on 20/04/1942, aged only 26.
