Biography
Andrew Kalitka was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA, on 23 Jan 1920, to immigrant Ukrainian parents, Dymytro and Rozalia (Levitsky) Kalitka. In 1929, Dymytro and Rozalia returned from America to Pukenychi, Ukraine, with the four youngest of their children, all of whom had been born in America, including Andrew (9/10) and Peter (7). In Ukraine, Andrew and Peter joined local militia forces (probably the Українська повстанська армія, УПА, Ukrayins'ka Povstans'ka Armiya, UPA), taking up arms against Nazi and Soviet occupation of Ukraine. Andrew was seriously injured in combat, and he and his brother Peter were captured by the German Wehrmacht and taken into custody. The brothers were sent to Mauthausen/Gusen, where Andrew later died. Peter survived his internment and was later liberated by American forces.
