Biography

Our Grandfather  Franciszek Rajski was born on the 3rd of September 1895. In August 1914, at the age of 18, he reported himself to the First Brigade and then said“My Mother-Poland, my homeland is there …”

He took part in many battles for independence of Poland and was awarded the Cross of Independence (Krzyż Niepodległości), the Cross of Valor (Krzyż Walecznych) and the Cross of the First Brigade. After the so-called “Oath crisis” in 1917 he was conscripted into the Austrian-Hungarian army. After the war he worked as a tax collector and occasionally as a butcher.

In 1942 he was arrested by the Gestapo for possessing a radio. His wife Aniela and their children Mieczysław and Halina stayed at home.

First, he was in the death camp Auschwitz (as a prisoner, number 60010) and then he was transported into Mauthausen-Gusen.

On the 20th April 1945, only two weeks before the liberation of the camp, on the orders of the camp commandant, he was murdered.
