Biography
Jan Szweda was born in 1909 in Grzawa in the Pszczyna municipality. He came from a family of farmers. He married Jadwiga Wojciech. Their son Florian was born in 1937.
In summer 1937 Jan was called up to serve in the Polish army. After the German invasion of Poland he was captured as a prisoner of war. He was interned in the prisoner of war camp in Biały Zdrój in the Balgari municipality, Koszalin district.
He worked on German farms in the surrounding area. He was deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp, presumably for acts of sabotage and the destruction of agricultural machinery. He died there on 25 September 1942.
Two of his brothers also died in the Second World War and another two were sent to Germany as forced labourers.
