During World War II, he actively participated in the 'Polish Organisation's' military activities in Tczew. When the German Nazis learned about the secret operations of this organization, Mieczysław Szczukowski was arrested and deported to the German concentration camp in Mauthausen for forced labor. The only way he contacted his family was through letters. In one of them, sent on September 17, 1942, shortly before his death; he was asking his parents about everyone's health. At the end, he asked to send regards to all his siblings. Hilary, the youngest brother, was only 6 at the time.
