Biography

My great uncle, Helmut Stahl died in 1943 at the age of 21 in a Nazi concentration camp.

Uncle Helmut was one of five children born to Frida and Friedrich Stahl. They grew up during World War II in Stuttgart, Germany. The times were difficult for everyone and more so for his family because they were not Nazi Party members and because both parents had to work leaving the children to take care of themselves.

Being a wild and rebellious kid, Helmut ran away from home at the age of 17 and joined the French Foreign Legion. He lied about his age and was sent to Morocco. When they discovered his true age, he was sent back to France where he crossed the border into Germany to go home. He was captured by the Gestapo (the Secret State Police) and accused of being a French spy. Somehow he managed to escape and made his way home. His sister spotted him in the backyard and she brought him into the house. When his mother came home the Gestapo showed up and searched the house. They did not find him because he had squeezed himself into the chimney and hid there. He realized he was endangering his family, so the next day he took a bicycle and left home. At a train station near the Swiss border he was questioned and arrested because he looked suspicious in his dirty clothes. (The night before he had hidden in a muddy field.) He was sent to a jail in Heilbronn, Germany.

Many months later his mother received a notice that he was being released from jail. When Frida Stahl went to pick up her son she found out that he had been shipped a few hours earlier to a concentration camp in Austria called Mauthausen. He survived for nearly four years. He was officially listed as dying from some type of sickness. A neighbor who was at the camp and survived told the family that he was actually shot trying to escape which was probably the truth.

In 1946 my father was born to my great uncle's sister Hannelore Stahl. She named him Helmut. Later my grandmother married Gerald Barnett who adopted the second Helmut Stahl.
