Born 10.7.1902 in Saulzet
Died 30.4.1945 in Schuls

Biography

His father Pierre was a domestic servant, his mother Marie, née Bost, did not work. Elie Talle completed his military service from 13 November 1922 to 7 May 1924 with the 6th Group of the Mounted Artillery. On 20 October 1924 he married Germaine in Saulzet. On 12 February 1940, now a father of two, he was called up again for military service and assigned to Artillery Depot No. 313.

He ran a bar in Saulzet. Following an attack on a collaborator, Jacob Markowski, he was denounced and arrested on 19 December 1943. He was imprisoned in the Mal-Coiffée German military prison in Moulins. On 22 March 1944 he was deported from Compiègne to Mauthausen concentration camp, where he arrived three days later on transport no. 1.191. There he was assigned prisoner number 60610 and transferred to Wiener Neudorf. In the subcamp, which had been established on 3 August 1943, the concentration camp prisoners were forced to assemble aeroplane motors.

Finally he was transported back to the Mauthausen main camp, where he was handed over to the Red Cross, which took concentration camp prisoners to Switzerland. However, according to information provided by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) he died immediately after his arrival in the Swiss region of Engadin.

A letter from the ICRC states: ‘Despite all the intensive care which was granted him on his arrival in Switzerland, he died on 30 April 1945 at 6.45am in Schuls Hospital (Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland). The patient was in such a weakened state that he was no longer able to speak.’

Mort pour la France (Died for France).

On 23 July 1954 he was posthumously awarded the title déporté résistant (deported resistance fighter).
