Born 26.3.1907 in Fuente Obejuna - Cuenca
Died 14.8.1941 in Hartheim

Biography

He was born on 26/03/1907 in Aldea de Cuenca (Fuente Obejuna, Córdoba, Spain). He was a day labourer.

He refused to submit to the coup uprising led by a group of fascist generals in 1936. For three years, he fought to defend Republican Spain until, in February 1939, he had to flee to France to escape Franco's advance.

After passing through several concentration camps in France, he enlisted in one of the Spanish workers' companies (Compañías de Trabajadores Extranjeros/Compagnie de travailleurs étrangers, CTE) serving in the French Army to try to stop the German invasion. Adolf Hitler's troops captured him in June 1940. Eugenio was interned in Stalag VIII-C Sagan (Poland) and XII-D Trier (Germany).

From Trier he was transferred to Mauthausen, where he arrived on 25/01/1941. Registration number: 3507. Transferred to Gusen on 02/08/1941. Registration number: 13379. He was sent to Hartheim Castle on 14/08/1941, where he was murdered in the gas chamber.

“We will have dictatorship for a long time, we will continue to fight for freedom and democracy to be able to vote freely” Eugenio Sánchez Rivera.
