Biography

Ivan (Johann) Godec was a very enigmatic personality and still many questions concerning his personality remain unanswered.

He was trained as an electrician or an engineer. After schooling, he was employed in various places of the then Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Because of his political (left, communist) orientation he was pursued by the police several times.

After the German occupation of Slovenia, the Gestapo arrested Godec on 27 July 1941 and he was then sent to Mauthausen concentration camp. His prisoner number was 917. He was then released from Mauthausen on 2 May 1942.

From that time on, there's a mysterious and questionable cooperation with the Gestapo, which resulted in his second and third time being imprisoned in Mauthausen (numbers 27202 and 31413).

Under the number 31413 he was registered as a prisoner of Mauthausen subcamp Schlier-Redl-Zipf.

In that camp fuel for the V2 was researched and manufactured. With camp connections Godec received the necessary plans and on 28 February 1944 made a sabotage in which a large part of the plant for the production of rocket fuel was destroyed. In that explosion 14 German experts and SS personnel lost their lives.

That sabotage was followed by extensive Gestapo investigation that led, due to treachery or due to carelessness of Godec, to relentless interrogation and ultimately to Godec's death, which is wrapped in a series ofquestions.

According to official SS data, Godec committed suicide on 17 March 1945, according to other data, he was killed and then hanged to cover up the actual cause of death.

Godec still remains a mystery and in his native town Trbovlje the opinions about him are strongly divided . On the contrary, in the UK, Godec is a true hero who rescued London from the German rockets.
