Biography

Mario Vanzati was born in Nova Milanese on 27 August 1911. He was one of the protagonists of the resistance in this town. The first meetings between local partisans took place in his house on the road to Desio where weapons were hidden. The leader of the small partisan group in Nova Milanese, Celeste Ghezzi, was asked by the Milanese command of the Garibaldi Brigades to provide some of his fellows for the GAP (Gruppi di Azione Patriottica), in order to replace some of the arrested members. One of the selected men was indeed Mario Vanzati who, despite many fears and doubts, accepted to join the group. He also took part in several actions to cut off the Nazi-fascist’s lines of communication. Eventually, his career as a Gappista was ended by an ex-partisan who, after being blackmailed, had switched sides. The trap was set in the Milan Arena, during the preparation of an assassination attempt against a fascist leader where Vanzati acted as a cover.

Once arrested, he was then interrogated and beaten up at the headquarters of the Muti Legion. Immediately afterwards he was sent to the Fossoli camp. Here, on 11 March 1944, a train loaded with 597 deportees stopped by. The train had left Florence on 8 March 1944 in direction to Mauthausen. Here the train arrived, loaded with 597 deportees, on 11 March. Mario Vanzati was given the register number 57460 and was then immediately transferred to the Ebensee camp. Here, he was exploited as a slave labourer in the Zement project under the command of the SS. His main duty was the excavation of underground tunnels for the future development of the production centre for V1 missiles. However, the increasing war emergencies soon made the Minister of the Armaments, Mr. Albert Speer, use that production site to produce much more necessary materials, in particular ball bearings and refined petrol.

On 15 May 1944, at the time of the excavations, Mario Vanzati died from the effects of cold, hunger and violence. He was one of the first deportees from Brianza. His name appears in the Mauthausen Totenbuch and he’s also mentioned in Vincenzo Pappalettera’s list, which was compiled just after the liberation of the Mauthausen area: “Mario Vanzati, from Nova Milanese, aged 34, died on 15 May 1944 in Ebensee”.
