Roberto Carrara Edit

Born 20.11.1915 in Verona
Died 1945 in Mauthausen

Biography

Roberto Carrara, a solder with the 77th Infantry Division, took part in the winter campaign of 1940/41 in Albania but was sent home again when his feet started to suffer from frostbite.

Instead of returning to his unit, in September 1943 he joined the partisans of the 54th ‘Garibaldi’ Brigade, who operated in Croce di Marone (Valtrompia-Brescia). He fought here until the end of summer 1944. Having returned to his family during his wife’s pregnancy, he maintained his contacts to the partisans as an informer and recruiter.

He was betrayed and arrested by the German SS on the night of 30 September 1944. He was initially detained in Brescia jail and then in the Bolzano transit camp, where he was brutally tortured so that he would reveal information about his comrades.

Since he did not yield under torture, on 19 December 1944 he was deported to Gunskirchen (Waldwerke 1), a subcamp of Mauthausen, and registered under prisoner number 113933.

On 25 April 1945 he was transported to the Mauthausen main camp. On 5 May, when the Allies arrived at the Mauthausen camp, no further trace of him was to be found.
