Biography

Franciszek and Józefa Janczar’s son was born in the Polish town of Wyszogród, in the Płock district. He was one of five children. His life was closely linked with the river Wisła from his earliest childhood. Later he became a river sailor. In 1940 he married a widow who had three daughters. The daughter they had together, Stanisława Elżbieta, was born in October 1941. In July 1944, with the Warsaw front growing nearer, Stanisław sent his wife and two-and-a-half-year-old daughter to his mother’s house in Wyszogród. At this time his wife was expecting another child. When the Warsaw Uprising began on 1 August 1944, Stanisław Janczar was living with his three step-daughters, his sister and the husband of one of the step-daughters, Franciszek Kalinowski, at 49 Freta Street in the Old Town of Warszaw. On 1 September 1944, when the Uprising in the Old Town was crushed, the whole group fell into the hands of the Germans and was sent via transit camp 121 (Pruszków) to Auschwitz, from where the women were deported to the Ravensbrück concentration camp and Stanisław Janczar and Franciszek Kalinowski to Mauthausen. Here Stanisław was given the prisoner number 95070 and classified in the ‘protective custody’ category. From 11 October 1944 he worked in the Wien-Saurerwerke subcamp, then in the Steyr-Münichholz subcamp from 23 April 1945, from where he returned to the Mauthausen main camp on 30 April 1945. He died on 9 May 1945 in the US Army Camp Hospital. The cause of death was given as ‘circulatory weakness with general physical deterioration’. This was the fourth day after the liberation and the day of Germany’s surrender to the Red Army. He wrote two letters to my mother but never learned that he had become, on 1 January 1945, the father of another daughter, Danuta. Franciszek Kalinowski died in Gusen on 10 April 1945 – at the age of 23. His wife suffered a miscarriage in Ravensbrück.
