Biography

From a letter from Martin Weiss, 29 December 2014:

‘I am gladdened that you are pursuing this long neglected but important project. Sadly, I cannot give you any names since I forgot their names some time ago. The only one I can tell you about is my father Jakub Weiss (Jewish name Yaakov Lev Weiss). Jakub Weiss (my father) lived in Polana, Czechoslovakia, and owned a business and a farm. Jakub and his wife Golda raised a family of nine children and everyone was full of hope while living under democracy. The Weiss family was full of hope for a bright future.

In 1939 the Hungarians, being allied with Nazi Germany, occupied our area which was referred to as Karpatská Russ or Carpathian Ruthenia. Yaakov’s world was shattered forever. The Hungarians shipped the Weiss family to Auschwitz. His wife Golda and four children perished there.

Epilogue: Yaakov Weiss was a proud, religious and ethical man who raised good children with high morals. As his son I can attest to that; the five of us who survived raised good and productive children and now grandchildren of whom I'm very proud.

Jacob died in Melk on 10 January 1945. Was cremated in Mauthausen.’
