Abraham Morpurgo 1901 - 1945 Edit

Born 27.3.1901 in Amsterdam
Died 1.2.1945 in Mauthausen

Biography

Abraham Morpurgo was my grandfather. The family lived a comfortable life in Amsterdam before the war. My grandfather was the owner of a retail and wholesale business dealing in household goods. The family belonged to the Sephardic community in Amsterdam. My grandfather moved the family to Brussels during the war where they took on a different identity. While in Brussels they were betrayed and arrested. My mother (Marie) was the only family member able to avoid arrest. She was the only survivor and passed away recently on 21 January 2018. The rest of the family (including Abraham) was deported from Mechelen on transport XXIV. My grandmother, great grandmother, two aunts and uncle left Mechelen, Belgium on 4 April 1944, arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau on 7 April 1944 and were apparently immediately selected as not fit to work. They were murdered on that same day. My grandfather was on the same transport but eventually ended up in Mauthausen where he perished on 1 February 1945.
