Biography

Vilmos Nemes (born Hausner) was the eighth of 13 children of David and Karolin Hausner (nee Weisz). He was born on 27 May 1889 in the village of Nemeske, Somogy County, Hungary. In the early 1900’s the males in the family changed their surname from Hausner to Nemes.

Vilmos married Margit Weisz on 6 February 1918 in Szigetvar, Somogy County, Hungary. He was 28 years of age. Margit was born on 1st June 1893 in Sizgetvar and was 24 when they married. At the time of their marriage Vilmos‘ address was Tatabanya, Komarom-Esztergom, in the north-western part of Hungary. Their only child, a son, Imre Nemes, was born in 1921 in Szigetvar.

Vilmos was the builder in the Hausner family and was responsible for re-building the original home of his parents in Nemeske as well as the houses and other buildings of members of the family.

His last known letter was dated 19 April 1944, written to a relative. The letterhead (see below) gives the address as Siofok which is located on the southern bank of Lake Balaton, one of the most popular summer holiday destinations in Hungary.

Five days later, on 24 April, he and his wife were taken away. According to Yad Vashem, Margit died on 5 July 1944 in Auschwitz and Vilmos on 6 March 1945 in Mauthausen. He was 55 and Margit 51.

Imre survived only because he was a forced labourer in Budapest whilst his parents were taken away. He became an architect. He emigrated to Australia with his wife and daughter, and died in Sydney in 2011 at the age of 90. His wife died the year before. Sadly their daughter died at a very young age in 1979 from illness. There are no known descendants of Vilmos Nemes but he and his family will not be forgotten.
