Jan Zalewski 1896 - 1945 Edit

Born 17.1.1896 in Warszawa
Died 17.4.1945 in Mauthausen

Biography

Before the war, Jan Zalewski and his family lived at 19 Rybaki Street in Warsaw. He had a taxi company which was seized in September 1939. Later he founded a horse-drawn carriage company, where his son-in-law Zygmunt Dybiec also worked.

After the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, a lack of food and essentials forced the family to hand themselves over to the Germans. After the men, women and children had been separated, they were taken to the transit camp in Pruszków. After this, Jan Zalewski was deported to Auschwitz concentration camp. According to his Red Cross files, he was deported on to Mauthausen concentration camp and then on to the Melk subcamp, where he was assigned prisoner number 96397. He died on 17 April 1945 in the ‘infirmary camp’ at Mauthausen.
