Biography

Kazimierz Poprawa, born on 13 January 1914 in Ostrowo, near Wrzesnia in Poland. Son of Stanisław and Elzbieta. He spent his childhood and youth in Wrzesnia, Poland. As a member of a Wrzesnia branch of “Falcon”, a Polish gymnastic society, and other patriotic organisations, Kazimierz participated in several athletic competitions, winning some of them.

Kazimierz was arrested for unknown reason and then transported to Mauthausen concentration camp, where he arrived on 8 March 1943. He was classified as an SV-prisoner (“Sicherheitsverwahrung”; security detainees) and given a prisoner number of 24776. On 10 September 1943, Kazimierz was transferred to sub-camp Wien-Schwechat and forced to work in hellish conditions in Ernst Heinkel AG airplane factory. Emaciated Kazimierz was then placed in the Sanitätslager of Mauthausen concentration camp, where he died on 19 April 1945, at the age of 31, two weeks before the liberation of the camp.

Survived by his parents and siblings; Bronisława Sobisz (a business owner in Wrzesnia) and Marian Poprawa (a dentist in Sandomierz), who were looking for any information about Kazimierz for years. He was a lost brother. Lost but not forgotten.
