Zbigniew Kowalski 1922 - 1940 Edit

Born 9.4.1922 in Brzezce
Died 9.8.1940 in Gusen

Biography

In the period leading up to September 1939, Zbigniew Kowalski was a pupil of the grammar school in Kęty, which was in present-day Kościuszko Street. Before his arrest he worked, like his father Kazimierz Kowalski, in the Brzeszcze coalmine. On the day of Zbigniew Kowalski’s arrest in Brzeszcze, students, teachers and other people suspected of collaborating with the resistance movement were being arrested in the whole Oświęcim district, Kęty included.

In the concentration camp my brother met his teachers from the grammar school, who had also been arrested. Many of them died. My father Kazimierz Kowalski received the news of my brother’s death. The Germans informed him that he had died of meningitis. This was, however, untrue, as my father found out from a friend of my brother, who fortunately survived and returned home after the war.

This was his account of what happened: They were working as prisoners in the stone quarries. After the morning roll call, those prisoners who were to remain in the camp had their numbers called out. The rest marched to work. My brother, whose prisoner number was 6917, was one of those told to stay in the camp. His friend said that he returned from the quarry to find my brother dying. Zbigniew finally died in his friend’s arms. According to accounts by other prisoners, those who stayed in the camp were given a phenol injection to the heart. These were early attempts to murder prisoners with phenol. This was also reported after the war in newspapers, which my father read. Unfortunately I can no longer find these newspapers, although I know my father preserved them as a talisman. In any case, it was an appalling death for such a young man. As proof I have a piece of pencil which has an impression of my brother’s teeth on it. He bit down on the pencil in pain. My brother’s friend, in whose arms he died, brought us this keepsake.
