Biography

Polish policeman from Bielsko, and soldier of WWI. Escaped Russian captivity and went through Siberia to return to his beloved country, Poland. When WWII began, he was proposed a post in the Silesian police but he refused. He was arrested in April 1940, sent to Dachau, then to Gusen CC. He was the first prisoner to escape from this camp on 29 July 1940.The camp commandos organized a cruel vengeance, later called in the prisoners' memories "the night of the devil". Many prisoners were beaten to death. After several days, Josef Nowak was caught when asked local people for bread. Beaten to death, his body was burned the same day. The official message sent to his wife said it was a "heart attack".
