Biography

Michał Cieślar was a teacher and social activist. He graduated from the Protestant teachers’ seminary in Bielsko. His began his first job in 1909 at a primary school in Górki Wielkie. Afterwards he worked in Stonava/Stonawa. In 1910 he moved to Kraków to teach at the Protestant school there. His career was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. In early 1914 he was called up for military service. After the war he returned to Cieszyn Silesia. He worked in schools in Bohumin Dworzec and Cieszyn and, from 1920 to 1926, in institutions responsible for the education system. In 1927 he resumed his teaching work in a school in Katowice. In 1930 he returned to his home village, where he became headteacher of the state school. His work was, however, not solely limited to teaching. In the 1920s he worked as an editor of a monthly education magazine. In its pages he published articles on the history of the Silesian school system and pieces on current problems in the teaching profession. From 1926 to late January 1927 he was editor-in-chief of the magazine. He worked with particular commitment as chairman of the Koła Macierzy Szkolnej (Alma Mater Circle). In 1938 the ‘Fund for the Support of Students’ was set up on his initiative. It enabled talented young people to access university education. However, he was not only active in schools. For many years he was a board member of the Horticulture and Beekeeping Union, which was founded in 1931 in Wisła, and from 1932 he was chairman of the board of the Cooperative Bank. He also campaigned for the improvement of professional training.

He then headed the public vocational school, founded in 1934, and worked for the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Szkoły Gospodarczo – Pensjonatowej (Friends of the Business and Hospitality Professional School), which was changed first into an agricultural college in 1936 and then into a hotel management college. He was also a teacher and district referee for the Polish Skiing Association and President of the Cieszyn Silesia Skiing Club.

In September 1939 Michał left Cieślar Wisła, but returned to his friends after four months. On the morning of 20 April 1940 he was arrested and taken to Cieszyn. Afterwards he was deported to the Dachau concentration camp (entry in the arrivals book dated 28 April 1940, prisoner number 6562). On 5 June of the same year he was transported to Mauthausen, where he died on 15 September 1940.
