Biography

Tadeusz Kowalczyk was born on October 14, 1901, in Wadowice. He had three siblings. In 1918, while a fifth-year student at a high school in Przemyśl, he volunteered for the Polish Army. He was assigned to the 37th Infantry Regiment and, in the following years, also served in the 29th Light Artillery Regiment and the 69th Infantry Regiment. He participated in battles, including those near Przemyśl and Lviv, for which he was awarded six medals, such as “Poland to Its Defender,” “To the Defenders of the Eastern Borderlands,” and the “Silver Star of Przemyśl.” He also received medals recognizing distinguished soldiers from the Lithuanian-Belarusian front.

In 1922, he graduated from high school in Stanisławów, and a year later, he began working as a teacher at the Primary School in Stanisław Dolny. From 1931 onward, he taught in Targanice. In the same year, he married Maria Orłowska, who was also a teacher. The couple had two daughters, Barbara and Jadwiga.

In 1938, Tadeusz Kowalczyk became the headmaster of the school in Brzezinka Dolna (Wadowice County). Between 1937 and 1940, he chaired the committee for building a new school. Together with soldiers, he established the village's first library, enriching it with his substantial private book collection. He was also the initiator of a regional highlander ensemble, where he played the mandolin, guitar, and violin. Along with his wife, he engaged in community work by organizing various courses, managing a theater group, and preparing performances and excursions for the residents.

In 1940, during the German census in Brzezinka, Tadeusz Kowalczyk warned the residents to declare their Polish nationality. As a result of this action, he was arrested on June 24, 1940, and transported to the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. He died on his 39th birthday.
