Died 25.1.1942 in Mauthausen

Biography

František Paulus was born on April 10, 1884, in Vilémov near Golčův Jeníkov. He later settled in Velvary, where he ran a coaching inn and became actively involved in public life. In 1931, he was elected first deputy mayor and served as a city councilor. In 1941, he was arrested by the Gestapo on the basis of a denunciation for listening to banned foreign radio stations. His son-in-law, Jindřich Bartoš, was also arrested. Both were first imprisoned at the Gestapo branch in Kladno and later deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp. František Paulus died in Mauthausen on January 25, 1942, and Jindřich Bartoš just two weeks later, on February 9, 1942. For his courage and resistance to the occupation, František Paulus was posthumously awarded the Czechoslovak War Cross 1939 on December 15, 1945.
