Àngel Artola Casals 1903 - 1941 Edit

Born 2.8.1903 in Sant Hilari Sacalm
Died 12.8.1941 in Gusen

Biography

Àngel Artola Casals was a Catalan teacher and victim of Nazism, born on August 2, 1903 in Sant Hilari Sacalm (region of La Selva, Girona) and died on August 12, 1941 in the Gusen concentration camp, annexed to the Mauthausen complex, in Austria.

He was part of a family of Republican teachers known as the Artola lineage. His father, Joan Artola i Surió, was also a teacher and worked at Sant Hilari Sacalm. His brothers suffered similar repression: two of them died in Mauthausen, while another was imprisoned by the Franco regime and abandoned teaching. His sister-in-law was deported to Ravensbrück, but survived and continued working in private teaching.

After the Spanish Civil War, Artola went into exile in France in February 1939, entering through the Portbou border crossing with the Republican army. He was interned in the Argelès concentration camp. He was later captured by the Wehrmacht and deported to the Mauthausen concentration camp with the convoy known as the 927, arriving there on 24 August 1940 and being registered with the registration number 4235. On 17 February 1941 he was transferred to Gusen, where he died.
