Born 28.5.1912 in Campos
Died 31.8.1941 in Gusen

Biography

Ramon Artola Casals was born on May 28, 1912, in Camps de Port, Mallorca. He worked as a teacher and wasn’t affiliated with any political party, although he was a member of the F.E.T.E. (Federation of Education Workers), a teachers’ organization. As an educator, he took part in school camps organized by the Barcelona City Council in Besalú, driven by his belief in public education that was accessible to everyone.

In 1935, he married Dolors Soler Beuda. After the Spanish Civil War, like many other Republican teachers, he was forced into exile. Later on, he was captured and deported by the Nazis to the Mauthausen concentration camp on August 24, 1940, where he was registered with the number 4203. On January 24, 1941, he was transferred to the Gusen subcamp and given the number 9018.

Ramon died in Gusen on August 31, 1941. He remains a powerful example of a brave and dedicated teacher who paid the price for war and dictatorship, and who stood up for a better, more inclusive education system.
