Born 5.1.1902 in Rzgów
Died 3.11.1941 in Gusen

Biography

Stanisław Mróz was born in 1902 in his family home at Olszak, a settlement near Rzgów, where he spent his whole, idyllic childhood. He attended a local primary school and then the state Tadeusz Kościuszko grammar school in Kalisz. After gaining his school leaving certificate he continued his education in Poznań, where he studied at the faculty of law and economics at the University of Poznań.

In 1943 Stanisław met Alicja Pomorska from Poddębice. They married on 22 April 1935. In the same year he took on the role of clerk in the municipality of Gostków, where he moved with his wife. A few months later, on 25 January 1936, their first daughter, Ninuchna, was born. In addition to his happy family life with his beloved Alicja, Stanisław also fulfilled his potential in his working life. Shortly before the outbreak of war he was nominated as district councillor for Łęczyca. His political career was, however, cut short by the German aggression. In these difficult and dangerous times, Mr. and Mrs. Mróz had a second daughter, Wisienka, on 18 November 1939, shortly after Poland was defeated in its war of defence and the last soldier of the Polish army surrendered.

However, Stanisław, was not able to celebrate the birth for long. He was arrested in April 1940 because, against the urging of his family and friends, he could not decide to flee: as a brave and resolute man, he voluntarily presented himself at the demand of the occupation authorities at the local Gestapo station. This decision would prove fateful for Stanisław. After being briefly detained in the Łęczyca prison, he was transported to the Dachau concentration camp on 6 May 1940 with other members of the Polish intelligentsia, where he was given prisoner number 8220. One month later, on 26 June, he was transported to the Mauthausen/Gusen concentration camp, where he spent the last year and a half of his life with prisoner number 5484. Abused, beaten and hunted like an animal, he died at 7.30am on 3 November 1941. According to the documentation, the cause of death was pneumonia. Stanisław’s body was cremated on 6 November in the crematorium of the Gusen concentration camp. Ninuchna and Wisienka never saw their beloved father again...
