Biography

José Durán Martori was a venerable Spanish republican. He used to run his own barber shop in Mataró when Franco invaded Barcelona. He moved with urgency to France with his wife Maria and his children Alberto and Antonia walking in the night to cross the French border. When Hitler invaded France, he was kidnapped and sent to Mauthausen concentration camp. He was probably killed in the gas chambers. His family moved to Venezuela (South America) to avoid the German persecution. His wife Maria was receiving a compensation from the German government the rest of her life.

Jose Duran was a barber and a Spanish Republican. He never agreed with Franco political approach so he joined the resistance. In 1941 he and his wife Maria decided to move to France with their two children, Alberto and Antonia, to avoid persecution from the Franco regime. They crossed the border walking for few days. As soon as they were established, he joined the French Résistance. He was captured and sent to Mauthausen concentration camp and killed in the gas chambers.

His wife waited for him all those years but he never returned home.

The Red Cross contacted his wife to notify her of his death at the end of the war. After that, his wife decided to move to Venezuela with her two children to start a new life. The German government compensated her for his death until the end of her life.
