Biography

My great-grandfather, Felix Błajet, was born on 8 October 1895 in Niemierzewo, near to Poznań, in an area that was annexed by Prussia at that time.

In 1918 he fought alongside Marshal Józef Piłsudski. He was wounded in battle: he was shot in the ankle, leaving him with a limp for the rest of this life. He was given a pension after the First World War for this reason.

In 1921 he married Benigna Nowak (1896–1979) and their four children followed soon afterwards: son Bernard (1922–2000) and daughters Krystyna (my grandmother, born in 1925), Felicja (1927–2003) and Barbara (1934–2013).

From 1919 to 1939 my great-grandfather worked at the main post office in Poznań, which was next to the main railway station on Głogowsak Street. He was responsible for delivering newspapers.

After the outbreak of war, Felix Błajet was forced to work for the National Socialists: along with other post office employees, he had to unload food packages that arrived from Germany and forward them to the front lines, to the German soldiers. The packages that arrived in Poznań weren’t always in a good condition, some weren’t fresh or were very dirty, so that one day the decision was taken to throw some of them away as unusable. Unfortunately this was noticed by one of the German soldiers guarding the loading operation. The Poles’ actions were regarded as sabotage and all the workers were arrested.

My great-grandfather was sent to Fort VII in Poznań, the Poznań concentration camp, the first concentration camp in Poland and later a Gestapo prison and transit camp. He was then taken to the prison in Rawicz and, finally, in December 1942, to Mauthausen concentration camp (prisoner number: 17829) and Gusen concentration camp (prisoner number: 6939). My great-grandfather never returned home; he died in Gusen concentration camp on 23 March 1943.
