Born 10.10.1914 in Hotovlja
Died 6.4.1943 in Gusen

Biography

Franc Galičič, born October 10 1914, was the third child and the first son of Janez Galičič, born October 15 1884. In 1910, Janez took over his father’s farm in Hotovlja near Poljane, a village in the river Sora valley (Poljanska dolina), with the nearest town being Škofja Loka. The family was Catholic.

His only child photo (Pic. 1), probably from 1917, when Franc must have been close to three years old, shows that he was a blond kid.

Franc completed his military service in the Yugoslav Army in the 1930s. He was trained in metalworking to become a turner, and worked in Jesenice where he was living during the week while during weekends he would often travel back home by bicycle.

As it can be clearly seen even from this black and white photo (Pic. 2) where he is around 25 years old, he had shining blue eyes.

His two younger brothers, born 1921 and 1923, joined the emerging local partisan unit which was established in December 1941 on the basis of the local pro-socialist/communist association which organised people to fight against German occupation. It is not clear if or how Franc was involved, too. Yet it was well known that the family was pro-partisans.

Franc was caught in the village Krivo Brdo by the German Army on November 23 1942. He was betrayed to Germans by local collaborators with the Germans. At this moment German soldiers came, Franc was inside a house in a room with iron crosses on windows, therefore he could not escape.

First, he was imprisoned in Begunje and from there deported to Mauthausen with the 9th January 1943 transport.

He died in Gusen, maybe already on January 15 1943 (Pic. 3).
