Biography
Marko Golja was born on 24 April 1879 in Croatia, in the city of Labin, village Veli Golji (at that time part of Austria, later part of Italie, from 1945 part of Yugoslavia). His father‘s name was Marko and his mothers name Verbanaz Caterina. He was married to Antonia, from 25 November 1905 until 11 May 1915 when she died. They had a daughter Lucia (Luce in croatian), born on 13 December 1907. Marko Golja remarried to Stemberga Lucia (Luce), on 4 September 1915. They had six kids: Nerina (Nevenka, born in 1919), Milano (Milan, born in 1921) who was a partisan and was killed by Germans in December 1944, Maria (Marija, born in 1923), Graziella (Gracijela, born in 1926), Giuseppina (Josipa, born in 1929) and Umberto (Berto in croatian, my father, born in 1932, the only child still alive). Marko used to work in a coal mine in Labin as a miner. Known as a calm and cheerful family man, he was sent to concentration camp from Trieste (Italie) on 8 October 1943.
