Biography

My grandfather Mario Minetti (prisoner number 58994) was born in Ponti, in the province of Alessandria, into a peasant family; while still very young he moved to live with relatives in Vado Ligure (Savona). Here he married Anita Revello, with whom he had a daughter, Caterina (my mother), who was born on 17 November 1938. During the Second World War he was called to arms. He carried out his military service in various places, including Mentone, Rimini, Arenzano and Lavagna. After the Italian armistice in September 1943 he returned home and began to work for the Sirma company in Vado Ligure.

On 1 March 1944 in Vado Ligure, as in many other towns in Savoy, a general strike was proclaimed in the factories, an exceptional form of resistance against the Nazi-Fascist occupiers and the terrible economic and social circumstances in which the civilian population found itself. The reaction of the Germans was not long in coming – on the very same day, purges began in the factories.

My grandfather was arrested and taken first to the police station in Savona and then to a barracks of the local Blackshirts. Towards evening the workers were transported by lorry to the Merello institute in Spotorno, where they were guarded by a Fascist group under the command of a certain Possenti, a member of the attack force. Following this they were taken to Genoa to the Villa di Negro, where they were examined and divided into fit and unfit. When my grandmother reached her husband to bring him clothing, it was the last time they were to see one another. The fit were sent to Sesto San Giovanni, from where their journey continued to the work camps for German arms production; the unfit, my grandfather among them, were deported in sealed carriages to the San Vittore jail in Milan and then to Bergamo and on to Mauthausen.

My grandmother received a telegram bearing her husband’s name and alongside it the remark: ‘departed, destination unknown’.
