Biography

Spiegel Ferenc (Jewish name Perez) was born on 1st January 1893 in Horvátkimle, in Győr-Moson-Sopron County in the north-west part of Hungary. His parents were Spiegel Samu (Shimshon) and Berta, née Krausz. Ferenc was the eldest son in his family. His younger siblings were Joszef (died at childbirth), Iren (perished in the Holocaust), Gizi, Karoly and Lajosz (Lajczi). His family later moved to Győr, aslo in Győr-Moson-Sopron County.

Ferenc married Sztern Regina (Jewish name Rachel), born in 1897 in Frauenkirchen, Austria, daughter of Sztern Solomon and Cipora. Ferenc and Regina lived in Győr, in a house close to the city center. Ferenc worked as a butcher and Regina as a photographer. They had one daughter - Marta, born on 6 August 1922. In March 1941, Marta married Weisz Arnold (later Avraham Livnat), and on the same day left Győr to settle in Palestine-Israel. Their decision to immigrate enabled Marta and Avraham to lead a long and prosperous life in Israel. They had two sons and later five grandchildren.

Ferenc and Regina, who remained in Győr, were detained in Győr Ghetto which was established in late May 1944. From there they were put on a train with cattle carts, either on 11 or 14 June, along with the majority of the Jewish population of Győr. After a three day journey, they arrived at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Regina was probably sent straight to the gas chambers, and Ferenc was selected to be sent to forced labor. On 19 June 1944, he arrived at Mauthausen Concentration Camp, and was sent to Gusen camp on the same day. He was classified as Schutzhäftling („political prisoner“) and was givet the prisoner nunmber 74501. Ferenc managed to survive in Gusen for about four months, and eventually perished on 23 October 1944, at the age of 51.
