Biography

Harry Hijman Tels, was born in Rotterdam on 29 June 1897. According to family tradition Harry studied law and after his father died in 1924, he took over the law firm in Rotterdam.

He married Lucie Juliette Elias and in 1926 their son Martinus was born and in 1930 their daughter Annie Eliza.

Harry was a skilled lawyer who valued honesty and integrity above all else. It was these two characteristics that would cost him his life. He was an enthusiastic sportsman who loved playing cricket and fencing. In 1938 he took part in a fencing tournament in Noordwijk where a German team also played. Reinhard Heydrich – the notorious member of the SD – was part of the German team. When the ‘Horst Wessel Song’ was played instead of the German national anthem my grandfather remained seated, his hat on his head.

Heydrich noted his name and Harry was arrested in 1942. He was taken to the Rotterdam police station ‘Haagsche Veer’. The concentration camps ‘Buchenwald’, ‘Natzweiler’ and ‘Mauthausen’ followed. In July Lucie received the news that Harry had died.

Possibly there is a connection between Heydrich’s and Harry’s death. The former was assassinated in Prague on 4 June 1942. Harry died in Mauthausen on 10 July 1942.
