Biography

Leopold was the oldest of five siblings of the Wolf family. He was an excellent pupil, spoke fluently seven languages and gave private lessons to other pupils in his town.

All the money he earned from the private lessons and from his excellence scholarships he gave to his parents to support the family. After graduating high school with honor, he chose to practice Medicine at Prague university.

In 1939, short time before graduation, Leopold was expelled from the university due to his Jewishness. Leopold was offered to move to London to complete his studies but chose to return to help his family at Uzhhorod Czechoslovakia (also known as Ungvar, Ukraine nowadays).

After the Hungarian invasion to Czechoslovakia, the second brother, Shmuel (Shani) was deported to Slovakia and his whereabouts are unknown. On 8 April 1944 Leopold, his two parents and three siblings were sent to a ghetto in a brick factory at Uzhhorod. On 28 May 1944 Leopold and his family were deported to Auschwitz where his two parents Antona-Taube, Shlomo-Aaron and his little sister, Feige Wolf were immediately murdered at the gas chambers.

At that same day, Leopold and his brother Moric were separated from their sister Sarah who was sent to forced labor at an armament factory.

Leopold and Moric arrived at Mauthausen on 8 June 1944. Due to his background, Leopold was nominated by the Nazis as the prisoners’ physician at Mauthausen, position that helped him support his brother Moric who was sent to a forced labor at Gusen.

Leopold died from typhus decease few months before Mauthausen was liberated by the Americans.

Both Sarah and Moric survived the camps, immigrated to Israel and started thriving families.
