Born 9.11.1893 in Cuzdrioara
Died 29.1.1945 in Gusen

Biography

Yehuda (Juda) Mozes was born on November 9, 1893, in Kozárvár in Transylvania, about 5 km northeast of the city of Dej. Today the area belongs to Romania, and the village is called Cuzdrioara. Yehuda is the third child of Samuel Mozes and Sara (Sarolta) nee Ludwig. He was preceded by his siblings Frida Milka (Fanny) Eisenbach/Weissfish and David Hirsch Mozes. After him the fourth brother Yosef Isaac Mozes was born.

Juda married Terez (Taube) Kohn, who was born in 1893 in Dej. They had six children: Roza (Zisel Rachel) in 1922, Regina (Rivka) in 1924, Salmon (Shlomo) in 1926, Berta (Bila) in 1928, Sara in 1930, and the youngest son Josef, who probably died at a young age. The family lived in Dej, at Kodor Street no. 8.

In May 1944, the Jews of Dej were concentrated in a ghetto, and in June of that year they were sent to the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. It was probably in this camp that Juda's wife Terez and their four daughters Roza, Regina, Berta and Sara perished. Juda Mozes was sent on June 13 from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Gusen camp. Juda survived in this camp for about seven months, until his death on January 29, 1945, at the age of 51.

Among his children, his son Salmon (Slomo) Mozes was the only survivor of the Holocaust years. He married Hana Leitner, and together they lived in Kiryat Yoel, New York. Shlomo passed away on July 26, 2013, at the age of 86.
