Biography

Tamás Tauszig or  as the family called him – Tomi was born on February 19, 1921 in Budapest to our old family nest on Szentkirályi út, where I still live. He had an older brother who died shortly after being born, and a younger sister born in 1922 - myself. He had a happy childhood, surrounded by love and care. He went to Zrinyi Miklós Reálgimnázium, where he has received his high school diploma (érettségi) in 1938.

He was a boy-scout, a member of the troop number 252, active in sports including hiking and rowing. He wanted to become a doctor, but because of the discriminatory Numerus Clausus laws this was out of question. He has completed training to be an auto mechanic and an electrician.

In 1942 he was drafted to labor service (munkaszolgálat). Although during his service there were some opportunities to see him in person, he never returned.

His fellows later described him as the most peaceful of them all. Together with his boyish qualities there was a gentle character to him. He was a sweet, benevolent, good natured child who turned into a handsome young man. Siblings tend to quarrel in childhood. Of course this happened to us as well, but what was truly characteristic of him, is what he would do when we received some chocolate. When we got chocolate, we would share it I and would eat my portion right away. The following day he would give me half of his half on his own initiative.
