Biography

Levie Mossel was born on 22 April 1906 in Amsterdam and was the fourth child of merchant Elias Mossel and Rebecca Mossel-Rozette. On 18 February 1942 he married Serlina Ensel in Amsterdam. His wife Serlina was five months pregnant with their first child when Levie was arrested on 2 May 1942. According to police records, Levie was arrested for “bribing a [police] officer”. On the 7 May 1942 he was sent to the prison of Scheveningen (The Hague) where Levie stayed until his deportation to Kamp Amersfoort on 1 August 1942. Upon hearing of her husband’s imprisonment in Amersfoort, the heavily pregnant Serlina moved back in with her parents and six siblings.

Levie was deported to Mauthausen from Amersfoort on 29 Augustus 1942. Unbeknownst to him, his wife Serlina wasn’t spared from deportation either. She went to Kamp Westerbork in the east of The Netherlands together with her family in early September 1942. Levie died on 1 October 1942 in Mauthausen aged 36. His wife Serlina, unaware of the fate of her husband, was put on transport to Auschwitz the next day. There are witnesses that claim Serlina gave birth on the train from Westerbork to Auschwitz. Serlina died a few days later on 5 October 1942 in the gas chambers of Auschwitz, either carrying a full-term baby, or a with their newborn baby in her arms.

Levie wasn’t the only Holocaust victim in his family. His parents and six siblings all died during the Holocaust. Both his parents and five of his siblings died in Auschwitz, one of his brothers was killed in Sobibor.
