Biography

Hartog Eljon came from an Amsterdam family of diamond cutters. He himself was a travelling actor who performed on stage and in several cinemas explicating mute short films. He and his second wife Hildegard Eva Dresel (from Breslau) were living at Berenstraat 20-I in the heart of Amsterdam when they were arrested on 3 and 4 July 1942. They had violated new anti-Jewish laws by refusing to wear the Yellow Star. Both were sent to hard labour camps. Hartog was transported to Mauthausen, his wife Hildegard was brought to Auschwitz via Ravensbrück. They were both killed but all of Hartog's children survived the war.
