Pierre Déjean 1912 - 1944 Edit

Born 16.7.1912 in Auch
Died 18.8.1944 in Hartheim

Biography

Born in Auch, France, in 1912, Pierre Déjean was the eldest of 4 children. At the age of 10, he joined the Éclaireurs de France, lay scouts in which he distinguished himself throughout his life, despite losing his right leg in an accident at the age of 13. His determination, a salient feature of his character, enabled him to overcome the suffering caused by this ordeal throughout his life.

After studying law in Bordeaux – during which time he helped form the student trade union movement – Pierre became a lawyer.

According to his friends, the man they called “Old Stork” was “a Gascon musketeer”, “as ardent as he was thoughtful, as passionate as he was balanced, Pierre Déjean showed unfailing devotion to the Eclaireurs de France association. For many, he embodied the Eclaireurs Ideal”. In 1939, Pierre married Jeanne, “Sloughi”, who was also an Eclaireur (1911–2009). They had two sons, Jean-François (1940–2023) and Marc (1942–2022).

Based in Paris during the war, and despite the ban on scouting by the Germans, Pierre directed and led the activities of the Eclaireurs de France in the occupied zone. As a member of the "Mithridate" intelligence network, he also used his travels and skills in the field to gather a great deal of information and draw up maps of railway and airfield switches and installations.

He was arrested by the Gestapo on 2 September 1943. Transferred to Mauthausen and then to Hartheim, he died there on 18 August 1944.

Decorations, medals, commemorative plaques and street names: Pierre received many tributes after his death, but none could replace the brother, husband, father, friend and guide he would have been had the war not ended his life.
