Biography

Mathieu De Jonge was born on 31 December 1911. He was a lawyer in Brussels, married and the father of four small children. Driven on by his ideal, freedom, he went into the resistance, joining the secret information service Zéro and the underground movement ‘Free Belgium’. In spring 1942 he took over as leader.

In March 1943 he went to Paris, where he was named the person in charge of Belgian information network which was to pass on information from Belgian and Dutch networks to London. On 20 May 1943 he was arrested following a denunciation and imprisoned in Fresnes. On 11 February 1944 he was deported as a Nacht-und-Nebel (‘Night and Fog’) prisoner to Mauthausen. Mathieu De Jonge died on 17 July 1944 in the Hartheim Castle killing facility.
