Biography

Georgios Tsourakis (also referred to as Tsurakis) was born in 1893 in Livadas, Chania, on the Greek island of Crete. He was a farmer and a cafeteria owner and had six children (four boys and two girls) with his wife Afroditi. During WWII he participated in the Greco-Italian front as a drafted infantry lieutenant. During the Axis occupation of Greece, he actively participated in the resistance, also assisting British and ANZAC forces (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) stranded in the island after the Battle of Crete (1941). He was arrested on 10 February 1944 and was transferred to the Agia prison camp in Crete, where he was heavily injured. In May 1944, he was transferred to the Mauthausen concentration camp (prisoner number: 65169). He was executed with others on 7 October 1944 in the Hartheim gas chamber.
